Northwestern Offering 2-year Law School Program
Northwestern University School of Law will offer an accelerated, two-year program for law degrees starting in 2009. The program will be conducted in five semesters and it will require the same number of credits as the three-year program, but will cost less. Candidates for the program are required to have at least two years of post-undergraduate, full-time work experience. Read more here
The Reason for the Recent Spike in Law School Openings
For universities it is more financially attractive to create a new law school than to create many other types of degree programs. For this reason, the U.S. recently became the world's first nation of 200 accredited law schools. The 150,000 students enrolled in law schools last year were an all-time high, and there at least ten new law schools being planned nationwide. Read more here

Law Students, Lawyers and Depression
Research seems to indicate that “lawyers are more likely to suffer from depression, alcohol and drug abuse than other occupations. . . . The problems often start in law school [because] ‘[u]nlike virtually all other professional educational programs -- medicine, psychology, business, accounting -- law schools tend to develop a cold, logical, Star Trek's Mr. Spock mentality. It can be a show me the money attitude, frequently ignoring the client's emotional concerns.’ " Read more here |
