ONLINE LAW SCHOOLS-ONE IMPORTANT QUESTION

In the coming years online law schools will continue to grow in number and for some people may be a reasonable alternative to traditional law schools. Anyone considering attending an online law school must consider one important question:

"Do you plan on practicing law?"

If you plan on practicing law then you need to learn whether the state in which you are interested in practicing allows people who do not attend American Bar Association (ABA) law schools to sit for their bar exam. The ABA is the organization that accredits American law schools, and in the exact words of the ABA , "There are currently (as of 2006) no online education programs accredited by the ABA for future lawyers." For more information go to: http://www.abanet.org/careercounsel/faq.html#online .

California is one state that allows people attending non-ABA accredited law schools to sit for their bar exam, and although I have not researched this issue, my guess is that most states do not allow graduates of online law schools to sit for their bar exams. To find out more information about whether the state in which you are interested in practicing allows for graduates of a non-ABA law school to sit for their bar exam contact that state's bar association at: http://www.romingerlegal.com/natbar.htm .

Furthermore, those states that allow for graduates from non-ABA law schools to sit for their bar may put additional requirements on such students that are not required of students from ABA accredited law schools. For instance, California requires students attending some non-ABA schools to take the First-Year Law Students' Examination. For those students required to take this exam, they must pass it within a certain amount of time after completing their first-year of law school. Passing this exam is a requirement for being eligible to sit for the California Bar Exam.
